Why did the painter Hilaire-Germain Edgar Degas paint ballet dancers?

dance was in fashion, and the dancers - coming from poorer backgrounds - accepted the patronage from wealthy men, and it was the dancers' mothers who used to "sell" their young daughters. So this "patrons" commissioned paintings and drawings of their protegees.

that's one of the reasons why Degas painted lots of ballet dancers.
