Does anyone have a pattern for a short chiffon ballet, dance, or skating skirt?

I need to make 5 short chiffon skirts for the fairies in A Midsummer Night's dream. I an looking for something similar to a circle skirt--heck, it can even be a circle skirt!

Many Thanks :)

Kwik Sew has good dancewear/skatewear patterns, and most fabric stores carry them. Another good pattern brand is Green Pepper, also available in fabric stores.

http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/...

I would make it shorter than this one.
Back to high school math class

measure the waist and add one inch. This is the circumference of the circle you cut for the pattern and mark it "waist". cut the pattern in paper and place the waist circle on another piece of paper, near the center. draw the circle and a second circle however many inches you want it to be long and add one inch for seam and rolled hem. Cut out the center waist crcle, the hem edge and a seam from waist to hem.

You have made your own pattern and can adjust for each girl.

http://www.simplicity.com and http://www.mccalls.com are the best easily available pattern companies online.
you dont need a circle skirt, just cut the fabric about the length you want plus hem and waist, and gather a lot of it up tight to fit the waist, add waist band and hem it. circles are a friggin pain to hem.

What is the most popular type of dance?? Tap,Ballet or Jazz.?

To perform? To watch?

I love watching ballet.......but hated my many years of taking ballet. I lovedddddd my jazz and modern classes instead. With modern dance you are so much more open for freedom and expression and various movements than in ballet. Ballet is a much more structured form.

Jazz? Man.......can't beat it. Let loose with larger movements........faster paces.......quicker more isolated movements of our body.

Now we come to Tap........*sigh* Tap. Not a fan. I do love watching the old MGM musicals where Gene Kelly is tapping up a storm. But I really really don't like watching little girls in feathers tapping their way across a stage in a recital. (just my personal opinion of course)

Well these are my thoughts........thank you for letting me express them. :)

What is the most popular type of dance?? Tap,Ballet or Jazz.?opera score

Well to answer your question I think everyone has their own opinion but right now Tap is big on Broadway. Jazz is quite popular and ballet is in play productions as well. They all have pro's and cons. I would sugest to try them all.

I have taken ballet for 9 years. Ballet is beautiful but you have to be in a state of mind to preform your best. It's also beautiful to watch. Expesially when the dancers are in unison.

I have taken tap for 10 years. It would probably say it's one of my favorites. It can be enterjetic and exiting or it could be more laid-back and calm. The costumes are awsome too! Also try Irish tap. It's really exillerating. I love it!

I haven't taken Jazz very long but it kinda depends who is teaching it. I think it's very fun as well.

What should you do if you want to begin ballet at a late age ( for my daughter)?

What is a "Late Age"? 7? 12? 17?

Has she been involved in other forms of dance already?

What other activities does she do?

I know several people who were involved with things like tap, jazz, and gymnastics from an early age (like 3) and then progressed into ballet later. Some as late as 12 years old.

More background is needed for me to give you a better answer.

GoodLuck!
We gotta know what is a "late" age first...

You can begin ballet at any age. If your daughter feels she is too old to start in a level one class for young girls there are adult classes
there is no late age. even if she's 35 and just starting and will never go pro, the exercise and self-esteem she will develop will be SO good for her!
there is no late age to begin dance though it might take up to a year to catch up with her age group standards

Nope I dont think its too late.. some girls on my dance/drill team just started taking ballet, they are around 16.
at 13......Nothing is too late!!
First do ballet. I am not trying to hurt your feelings but it is hard and hurts like crap.( so does pointe) You have to do ballet first and your tap jazz and hip-hop will get soo much batter. It is never to late to accomplish all of your goals in life so keep on working hard!
It's never too late to start. I know someone who started doing ballet her junior year in high school and she went on to major in dance in college. Work hard and don't give up on your dreams. Good luck!
Absolutely not!

It will help you with your jazz, tap, and hip hop. It's the base for everything.

I'm a dance major in college, and many of the girls I go to school with didn't start ballet until college.

It will take a while to get to pointe though, so work on learning the basics of ballet first. You should take ballet for a few years before pointe.

Ladies, consider the following example. Think Feminsim, Think courtship ballet that is no longer pla

A young, well to do, white woman walks ( being pulled ) her dog Charlie down the road. A young, well to do, man approaches and tries to explain about the procedure of how to HEEL a dog.. Her reply, Don't tell me how to walk my dog, psycho and she swiftly moves on..

A young, well to do, hispanic / asian / african America woman walks ( being pulled ) her dog Charlie down the road. A young, well to do, man approaches and tries to explain about the procedure of how to HEEL a dog.. Her reply, very open and receptive.. Doesn't see this as an intrusion at all into her freedoms or femininity. Doesn't see psycho.. Not in fear..

Of course, this is a generalization, but this is the thinking of many men out their nowadays. Many American white men, see white woman as unapproachable stuck-up fearful or feminists. They see other races of woman as approachable. Of course, I don't speak for all, but wanted to put this out there and get comments from woman. Thankyou

Ladies, consider the following example. Think Feminsim, Think courtship ballet that is no longer played?sunshine

and what does chivalry %26amp; courtship have to do with someone telling someone else how to do something 'properly'?

if you're talking approachability, you didn't use a very good example. did you try this out with every woman you saw walking a dog? did you also do a survey of them, asking them basic fundamental beliefs about dogs, strangers, advise, and also men?

then i'd venture to say that your *one* encounter with *one* woman, assuming that even happened, could not provide you with enough info to even begin to generalize, especially since one must assume it was the only encounter that did potentially occur, since you were so vague about the "hispanic / asian / african America woman " encounter, so you actually have no basis for your argument, using the example you did.

and also, have you ever offered to correct a man when you saw him do something 'incorrectly'? was there a difference in response that varied according to race?

Ladies, consider the following example. Think Feminsim, Think courtship ballet that is no longer played?star theater opera theater

Tell me Peter, what would you do if an unfamiliar woman approached you and gave you unsolicited advice on how on walk your dog properly??? Oh wait, you're a man, so you would never find yourself in that situation, because, as a man, you automatically think you know how to better walk a dog...and therefore if a woman did approach you to CORRECT you, you'd probabaly have a mental melt-down like no other.

Your post? BALDERDASH.

Probably comes from militant feminists claiming that every single male is a rapist or potential rapist. Paranoia sets in.

Approximately how much does it cost for children's ballet classes?

It really depends on the studio and the length and frequency of classes. I pay $60 per month for one 50 minute class per week. It is the average in my area.

Approximately how much does it cost for children's ballet classes?opera songs opera theater

Depends on where you plan to take your daughter/son.
here in texas they are asking 40 dollers a month
depends on the place..where i go about $40
it really varies by studio, the place i went togrowing up,which is still going, started at $5 to register and then like $25 a month, now its up to 50 to register and 40 a month. its all over the board.

if she isn't particularly interested in the actual recital look inyo kids classes at some gym's and after school programs, those tend to run a bit cheaper.
At the studio I teach at, it's $45/month for 45 minute classes.
As others have said - every place varies and places that are more expensive aren't indicative of higher quality.

Many places charge monthly, or offer a slight discount (5-10%) if you pay in a lump sum or 2 installments. Averaged out, the places I've seen have been anywhere from $10 to $15 per lesson. This sometimes depends on the length of the lesson as well - many are 45 minutes instead of a full hour, which you may wish to factor in.
It all depends on the particular studio. I am an assistant teacher for the 4-5 year old class. For a 45 minute class once a week, it is $37 a month. I would say anywhere from $30-50 depending on the level.
If your looking at paying each time your child attends then i think that the classes will be around anything from 锟?.50-锟?.00 per lesson nowadays.

Everywhere will up their prices every so often though so if your child stays there for years you will gradually end up paying more i should think.
Depends on were you go, some can be really expensive, bt in Porth, south wales i only pay 锟?.25 a lesson.

Why did the painter Hilaire-Germain Edgar Degas paint ballet dancers?

dance was in fashion, and the dancers - coming from poorer backgrounds - accepted the patronage from wealthy men, and it was the dancers' mothers who used to "sell" their young daughters. So this "patrons" commissioned paintings and drawings of their protegees.

that's one of the reasons why Degas painted lots of ballet dancers.

I have a question about using the barre in ballet?

During stretches that include placing my foot on the barre...my knee locks on my leg on the ground and it hurts really bad durring the stretches. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...any ideas?

I have a question about using the barre in ballet?ballet theater

Have you talked to your instructor? Your standing leg should be soft with a very slight bend in your knee in order to keep it from locking. If you can't put your leg up without locking your knee, try a lower barre.

I have a question about using the barre in ballet?chicago theater opera theater

Don't put your feet on the bar.
You should be asking your ballet instructor. Without seeing you it is difficult, but my guess it has something to do with the direction of your foot that is on the floor.
The barre is to high for you .... back in the stone age when I started they had 2 barres on the wall one low and one high.

Starting Over is correct you should ask for guidance from your instructor with regard to foot and leg placement which has allot to do with it also.

As for always having a bend in your knee that is true for Ice Skating but not for ballet ... if you look at pic of any professional dancer you will barely be able to tell they even have a knee cap due to years of training to always lock your knees other than when you are executing a particular movement that requires a bending of the knee.
You might have a 'ganglia' in the back of your knee bone....go to the doctor please and find out. I too took ballet...i understand.
I think that all the other answers are valid but I have one more comment of my own. I think that the problem might be your quads. What I mean by that is that sometimes if our quads are too tight they pull on our knees and that makes them lock, hurt or sometimes stop working properly. If it hurts that you need to stretch your quads. You can do that by standing on one leg and bending the other one on the side of a table or high bed until you feel a stretch. You can also stretch them by bending your knee and holding your leg from behind. Just don't bend the knee too much. You need to push your hip join forward so you don't put pressure on the knee but stretch the muscles. Good luck.
I had the same problem when I took ballet. It hurt! But my schools all had two barres, so I'd use the low one.

Sorry, I don't know what you're doing wrong, if you even are.
I used to have the same problem. you need to strengthen your core . . . glutes, psoas, etc. you are quite possibly using the wrong muscles to hold yourself up . . . pilates really helps to strenghten what you need.
make sure you keep your hips squared. dont let your knees rotate

How can you get shoulder length hair into a ballet-style bun?

I have to have a good bun (it can't just be the kind where you pull the ponytail halfway thru the scrunchie) for a play. When i put my hair in a ponytail, the ponytail is only about 5 inches long- not enough to twist the ponytail and wind it around the base like most people do. Any ideas?

How can you get shoulder length hair into a ballet-style bun?concert tickets

How to Make a Bun

A bun is a versatile hairstyle--this look can range from simply functional for household chores to utterly sophisticated for a night out!

Steps

1. Spritz hair with enough water to make the hair pliable.

2. Apply the gel of your choice through your hair. To get the "slick" look, use a gel marketed to athletes (such as Dep). This type of gel usually helps fight humidity and calms the frizzies, especially in curly hair.

3. Secure your hair in a ponytail using a ponytail holder. Position the ponytail about where you want the bun to lie.

4. Twist the tail. Guide the twist into a coil around the ponytail holder. For people with longer, thicker hair, bobby-pin the coil into place as you wind it around and around the ponytail holder. People with shorter, thinner hair can often get away with winding and twisting the coil first and then inserting bobby pins about 45 degrees apart from each other (think of your bun as a circle).

5. Make sure to secure the end of the ponytail to the bun with a bobby pin.

6. To continue with that sleek, pulled back look, you may opt to wrap a hairnet that matches your hair around the bun. This will keep any stray hairs in place and is especially crucial if you are putting your hair in a bun to go exercising (so it will not fall out of place). Secure the hairnet with more bobby pins.

7. Spritz the entire hair style with hairspray.

Tips

* There are many variations on this hairstyle. Try parting your hair in the middle or on the side before tying it back into the ponytail. Leave a few strands out for the romantic look. Adjust the level of the ponytail (low, mid-head, or on the crown of your head). Experiment with falls, fancy hair clips, or fun barettes. Try braiding the tail before you wind it around into a bun. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Bun

You may have to do it while your hair is wet, and ued bobby pins, the same color of your hair if you still have some wanting to come out.
I have the same problem. I am a ballerina and I have to deal with this every week. Try this... take a shower, or wet down you hair because its a lot easier to work with. Then Put you hair in a pony. You know how after you put your hair in a pony, theres a lil hole that is formed because of the pony tail, well push down all the hair around that, and bobby pin it. I know its hard to explain without showing you, but also try the way where you twist the ponytail, but with your hair wet, and if you have lil pieces that stick out, try securing it with another pony tail, and use a lot of hairspray/gel to smooth those down!

best of luck

Do i wear a bra under my leotard in ballet class?

Do i wear a bra under my leotard in ballet class?performing art center

No. The back will usually cut too low and your bra will show. The bra restricts your movement. You'll get use to it. Must serious ballet dancers don't even wear panties. We just use the tights as our underwear.

You can buy like a special dance bra if you don't feel comfortable. Check out the undergarment section of www.discountdance.com

Do i wear a bra under my leotard in ballet class?theatre tickets opera theater

it depends. try on your leotard at home and jump around in it. if it feels like you already have enough support under the leotard, then no. but if you have a plain cotton leotard or one that doesnt have a built in bra, then you should invest in a good sports bra.. but not too bulky.
Yes. It usually helps to wear a bra, but you may wish to get a sports bra rather than the one you usually wear. It makes things simpler and blends in better with your leotard. Sports bras make you look like you have "uniboob" but they are sufficient for the activity and really do look better in that context than a regular bra.
yes. if it sticks out, too bad. ur a girl, u have too or it may be too exposive. if someone sees, nothing is going 2 happen cuz everyone else is a girl, right? if there ARE boys, there take a safety pin and attach the strap to the leotard so it wont slip out.

hope u have fun!!! i always loved dancing!
Please do (there are very lightweight bras) that will do.
I don't wear my bra under my leotard because it shows through. You do have to wear it on recital day unless your teacher asks you not to.
YES! YES! YES! You don't want to be "that" girl!
Try to find a leotard with an already built in bra. But make sure it gives you enough support. I am pretty sure they have them. Or just get a light sports bra, and make sure it does not show in the back. You definiatly need to wear one. But make sure it lets you do the same moves you could before.
u could... i do but some don't i've been takin ballett for 8yr..... but if u do... tuck in the straps.
you can but it depepnds on the leotard you are wearing. If it feels like you dont need anything dont wear one, but if it feels like you do try wearing a sports bra.

God bless
Usually you do, but try on your leotard, and jump around, do some moves, etc. Feel in place and comfortable? If you're fine, you might not need one. But if you do want to wear one, choose a sports bra or any other bra you can find that is thin and won't give an outline through your leotard.
i don't wear one with my leotards because i pretty much don't have anything to hold up. but if you do, here are some leotards that have a high enough back so that the bra won't show.

RELAX! they are simple!

if you know how to do picke {sorry i dont know how they are spelled but they are pronounced "peekay'} turns, this should be easy.

a posse is basically bringing your toe to the side of your knee with both legs turned out. if you can, you rise on your toes.
Exactly what they said - same as pique turn position, just bring your working leg to the front - toes should sit just below the kneecap in the front of the supporting leg.

Another way to look at it is to start in coupe and draw your foot up your working leg up to posse position!

Hope I helped!

Why are today's modern dance choreographers returning to ballet technique and choreography?

You really cannot have modern dance technique without ballet technique. Modern dance came into being because of ballet and ballet technique. The first modern dancers in the early 1900's were rebelling against ballet and the rigid technique. Ballet uses turnout and a "locked " frame. Modern dance uses parallel positions, freedom of movement, esp spirals in the upper body. Modern dance has continued to evolve over time and is being stylistically catagorized with different names such as contemporary, jazz, classical jazz or modern jazz. It's a natural progression to encorporate ballet techniques into modern dance. it's all related really.

Ballet is the substance of all dance. Including contemperary. Bascially it's ballet on crack. I love my contemperary. Like the person above said, you can't have contepmerary clases with out ballet backgound.

They always have. Martha Grahm used to make her modern dancers take ballet! It is inspirational for a lot of people and virtually every style has its roots in ballet in some form of another. Ballet helps you learn so many things, especially about balance.
Because you have to learn the technique before you can break free from it.

Why can't you wear underwear under tights for ballet?

Tights are skin tight garment, they show your underwear when you are wearing underwear and show your butt when you are not. The only thing i think i can wear is a thong or a G-string and every time i wear them they give me a rash. I wanna know, do you have to clean your butt very well before putting on a thong or a G-string.

Why can't you wear underwear under tights for ballet?theater seating

You're not supposed to wear underwear because it looks bad. It either hangs out from underneath or if you bunch it up it looks like a diaper. Just wear the tights and make sure you wash them well. It's part of being a dancer - get used to "going commando".

Why can't you wear underwear under tights for ballet?lyric opera opera theater

wearing underwear under your tights is bad. it affects your lines and is unhealthy. it can cause infections(i wont go into detail)

as for the rash. i had the problem with my dance belt causing it and it sucks. good luck figuring it out.
Ask your dance instructor these questions!!!!!!!!!!
you can wear underwear, ido
i don't understand why you can't wear underwear i always have and i didn't get rashes or anything like that and i have been dancing for 4 years
Yes personal hygene is very important if wearing a G-string. You can easily get a UTI if you're not clean. Wiping may be not good enough. Fresh out of the shower is more like it. Also find a different pair of strings - different brands are made differently, maybe there is a pair that fits your butt better.
First off, is this being asked by a guy cause if it is then you really dont know anything about dance, cause you would know that under your tights you wear a dance belt, and under that you would wear underwear. If this is a girl, who told you that you can not wear underwear under your tights and leotard, because who ever did is wrong, i have been in dance for years and have always worn underwear under my tights and leotards, and really asking if you should clean yourself well before putting on a g-string, what do you think the answer is? If you are a girl, you must always keep yourself clean, or you will end up with an infection, easy and simple. This is the type of question that you should be asking your instructor and parents.
I love seeing a female wearing just bra, panties and tights especially printed panties

What kind of shoes should I wear with this brown ballet styled dress to a wedding?

I bought this dress : ( http://www.gap.com/Asset_Archive/GPWeb/A... ) and I'm unsure of what type of shoes to wear with this dress for an informal wedding. I was thinking red heels, but I don't know if that would be inappropriate, as it is a wedding.

What kind of shoes should I wear with this brown ballet styled dress to a wedding?comedy show

you could wear red like the shoes pictured with the dress. however, since it is a wedding, i would not wear anything to attract lots of attention. i.e., flashy red high heels. you should not wear the same color brown as the dress, you could go with a lighter brown. however, i would stay away from brown at all. its too much. if you choose the red, make sure its flat and not shiny.

What kind of shoes should I wear with this brown ballet styled dress to a wedding?greek theater opera theater

A great thing to wear with that is a pair of light brown flats so cute
Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and attractive. If you like the red heels, go for it. I would think any strappy sandal would look great with this dress. Nothing too clunky; the dress is too delicate for that.
How about trying a gold color. It won't be too bright but it will definitely go with the brown.
I really like the dress, but I think red heels would not look right at all! (no offense)

If its informal, since the dress is semi-formal, you could dress it down with brown, or white flip flops.

You could also try maybe some heeled sandals, since its summer, maybe peep-toe pumps even.

If I were you, I would definitely go with some sort of open toed shoe, thats white or possibly brown (not black, red, ect..)

I hope this helps so you can look fantabulous at the wedding!

Definitely not red! The dress is very cute and yes I see the model is wearing red but I still don't think it looks good on her. Red - no. A cute strappy heel would look very nice. You know this is a great dress by the way. It's casual but can easily be dressed up a bit by the shoes %26amp; the accessories you choose to wear. I would start by selecting your accessories ( ie. jewelry) and by doing this you can introduce another color to your outfit and then select your shoes to compliment both the dress and the jewelry. Good Luck! Enjoy the wedding.
gold flats.
simple white heeled sandals
you should wear gold metalic flats and gold jewlry aND MAKE UP. GOLD LOOKS HOt w/ brown.
i think that a peep toe pump would be very cute with the dress but keep in mind its the brides day to shine and u dont want to take it away from her
I would try wearing gold shoes! Also get some gold accessories to match! Good Luck!%26lt;3

When is the best time to start to train for ballet?

As early as the person in mentally able to handle it. Ballet is tough, and is mentally draining. The reason they should start at early as possible is so they can get their turnout and flexibility before they stop growing. The later someone starts, the harder it is going to be for them to develop good technique and turnout. I personally started at 2.5 y/o and I've seen others really struggle that started age 9 or 10

When is the best time to start to train for ballet?events

Age 4

When is the best time to start to train for ballet?home theatre opera theater

well before the show.
The best time to start ballet is 5 or 6 years old. That's when I started because when you start later your bones are already formed and you don't have the same flexibility with the one that started in their childhood.
As early as you can! I started when I was 8.

Anytime before your teen years, of course, you CAN start in your teen years, but when you start younger, typically you have a better performance.

You start training en pointe no earlier than age 11.

So get started training! Good luck!
About when your five years old, then your kids won't only be good behaved they will have a talent that could possibly put them though college.
birth
4 years old.
I've heard and read that NEVER is to late to start ballet .
Generally any age before 10 is a good age for children, but really it doesnt matter unless you are looking to be a professional dancer. If you are an adult who wishes to dance, ANY time is good. Its Great excercise and super fun!
age really doesn't matter, any time really i've known ppl 2 start at age 2 and ppl who have started at age 45! i mean it really doesn't matter as long as yr willing 2 dedicate yrslef! :)
For kids, I'd say age 6-7 depending on how well they are motivated. As for adults...I'm 56, taking ballet classes and have danced as a background dancer in several productions.
Alligator you need to let of thee stress at school and start acting your age!! im sry 4 whateva i did, and i think you should wait til' you can go in a full split and til' your muscles are fully grown!!

sry bout dat,

Well...as young as possible really. I just started ballet and I'm 14, and it's pretty difficult because I'm not as flexible as many of the girls in my class. I'm doing okay because I have previous dance experience, but it's taking a lot of work. On the other hand, one of my friends has been doing ballet since she is 3 and since she started so early, she is extremely good at it and has been en pointe for a few years now. Basically, starting as young as possible is the best option, but if you're willing to work hard, you can start at any age.

Of course not, it's totally natural.

absolutely not - I like to stare unashamedly at such sights to brighten my shopping trips
Well there is nothing wrong with it as long as you draw the line there and don't move up to a tutu and leotard.

Even this might be ok as long as you didn't pass in front of a window where neighbors could be shocked and appalled at it.
Yea!!!! unless u one fruity grown man
men wear pink and he probably slipped on his wife or girlfriend shoes 2 step out real quick...
um at the grocery store, hate to break it to ya but, yea there is something weird about that
only if he has his tutu on tu
The rule is ,if you wear them to the grocery store, you have to wear the matching tutu.
Depends if the man feels comfortable doing so. Also depends on whether he does this in private or public as the public display of a man wearing pink ballet slippers will get more attention. Would it make a difference if the ballet slippers were another color? Perhaps black?
Maybe he got up really tired and just got dressed slipped on shoes he left by the door and went out to the store not even realizing he put on his wifes ballet slippers she wore around the house. You might just be making a big deal about someone who was just really tired out trying to get through life.

Does somebody know anything about Mikhail Baryshnikov ? Is he teching Ballet clasess?ballet

Yep, Mikhail Baryshnikov, a native of Riga, Latvia, began studying ballet at age nine; as a teenager, he entered the school of the Kirov Ballet, graduating from student to principal dancer in 1969. In 1974, he left Russia to pursue a career with ballet and modern companies around the world, settling in NYC in 1979 as a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre and from 1979 to 1980, with New York City Ballet. 1n 1980 he returned to ABT as artistic director, nurturing a new generation of dancers and choreographers. In his illustrious career, he has danced more than one hundred different works on the world's greatest stages. Most of the world's foremost choreographers have created works especially for him. Baryshnikov has proved himself a capable actor, starring in five films and earning an Oscar-nomination for his performance in "The Turning Point." He has appeared numerous times on television, including three Emmy award-winning specials. In 1989, he appeared on Broadway in "Metamorphosis," earning a Tony nomination and a Drama Critics Award. From 1990-2002, Baryshnikov was co-director and dancer with White Oak Dance Project, using his remarkable talents to expand the repertoire of American modern dance. Mr. Baryshnikov is currently devoting his time and energy to the Baryshnikov Arts Center, which is in it's inaugural year. Among his most recent awards are the Kennedy Center Honors, The National Medal of Honor, the Commonwealth Award, The Chubb Fellowship, and the Jerome Robbins Award.

I'm 1.55 m and i want to dance ballet. what's the ideal weight?

I think they generally prefer a BMI of 17.5-18, which is extremely low. I'm converting your height to be just under five feet, six inches...or four feet, six inches? I'm not sure, but to calculate BMI you find your height in inches, squared (i.e. multiply height in inches by height in inches), then you divide your weight by the height number. Multiply the resulting number by 705 and the total should be a two-digit number with a couple hundred decimal places. Average BMI is 20-25. As I said the ballet standard tends to be VERY low. Don't do anything unhealthy if your body doesn't reach it naturally through diet and exercise.

Just keep stretching. Get one of the elastic bands and use it to stretch your leg up. Even if you aren't doing the move itself if you are stretching your leg up then it will help. Just be able to move your stretch far because if you can then you can pretty much get your legs as high as you want. Just keep stretching in splits and get to be able to do it really well.GOOD LUCK

I usually watch all of my ballet videos on youtube, (you mean barre, not bar, correct? teehee) I would just go to ebay or something, and buy these for cheap instead of looking for pirated films, however, some are meant for youtube.com. and i'm sure that if you can't find these, you can find other useful workouts. Maybe ask someone on dance dot net or something to record one for you. Dunno. I might post this on a more dance-workout oriented sight, though.

Is truth that i'll only get ugly toes if i do pointe in Ballet? Does Pointe cause most of Balle

I've not seen too many dancers' toes that aren't ugly (mine are gross)...it comes with the territory. Remember, even if you have nasty feet, the rest of you looks great. Most ballet injuries are not pointe related, but the usual athletic injuries to knees, hips and backs. The most important thing I can tell you about potential injuries, is to make sure you stretch and warm up adequately. Good Luck to you...

Is truth that i'll only get ugly toes if i do pointe in Ballet? Does Pointe cause most of Ballet injuries?opera score

1. yes, pointe will give u ugly feet. its a known fact--- all dancers have ugly feet! =D lol

2. u can get injured doing any kind of dancing, but i guess u could say its the most common way people get hurt

Is truth that i'll only get ugly toes if i do pointe in Ballet? Does Pointe cause most of Ballet injuries?musicals opera theater

yes it does its mostly caused by injury like falling but pointe tightens up the muscles and loosens some others in your foot which causes injuries and not the best looking toes
If you have weak ancles then yeah.you have to take a beginner class cause you go on your toes a lot and you go on releve' a lot.And It does cause some injurys.
Ugly toes? not a clue. Sore/hurting/blistered/calloused toes? of course, it comes with dancing on them!

I don't think that pointe causes most ballet injuries. As long as you've been dancing at least twice a week for about a year before you start pointe (to build up strength in you ankles) and warm up properly and don't try stuff you aren't ready for (like doing pique turns your first day on pointe), then you shouldn't get injured. But there is always a chance of getting injured, but that's there in any sport.
as you dont trust a skinny baker, you dont trust a ballerina with nice feet.
1. Pointe can give you ugly feet.

2. Pointe is not the only type of ballet that can give you injuries. It can give you injuries but ballet can give you injuries too. If you sickle while in Cou de pied, you will fall or strain your ankle. If you do your arebesque wrong you can get a bad back too.

Who cares? Legwarmers are just HOTT!!!.

Actually, cotton good. Plastic bad.

But legwarmers are HOTT!!

Nad
they are different fabrics, acrylic is synthetic fabric, which means that the threads are actually made out of plastic. the cotton ones are natural, the threads are made out of cotton. i would get the cotton ones, they probably feel better. i dont know about tax, and shipping depends on where you live. the company is based near la, so the further away from there, the more expensive. ground shipping for me is 6 dollars and i live in san francisco.
its just a difference in material, one nno better than the other. my only leg warmer advice is to make sure of the style. i used to wear body wrappers, and the flared in an unfinished hem at the enkle, and were unfinished at the thigh. but now they put in elastic at the top, so your leg chub gets squeezed out leg cake frosting. its uncomfortable and looks horrid. you may want to try a pair by melody, very cute, very comfy.

I'm not from Washington D.C., but my suggestion is too look into applying for scholarships that the dance schools in that area may offer for their summer dance programs. Those may cover part or all of your tuition for the summer if you meet all of their requirements.

K i want to be in a summer program for ballet. but it has to be free and be in washington dc.?performing art center opera theater

There are no free summer dance programs. There are too many expenses to run a studio (and pay teachers enough to eat and live off of) to offer free programs. There should be dance studios in your area that offer summer classes, but those will cost money.
You will not find a free dance camp anywhere!! It will at LEAST cost you the learning fee otherwise even more such as food, living quarters and other things too.
Unless you have an "in" with the school, there won't be any free classes. Nothing is free in the world!
As far as I know, there are no free GOOD summer dance programs. But you may want to audition for one and apply for a scholarship, because some will give you a full tuition scholarship. If you're looking for one for this summer, auditions are probably over, so I recommend planning ahead for next year.

good luck!
DC would be a good place for that. The politicians certainly know how to dance.

Oh my goodness, yes of COURSE she can still be as good!

People are right in saying that she'll have to work hard, but anyone has to work hard in ballet, regardless of when they start!

And just to prove to you that she has a chance -- my dance instructor didn't start dancing until she was a freshman in college, then later went onto dance professionally as well as get her PhD in dance. So your sister has plenty of time to learn! :)

As far as "being good", it just depends on her personal discipline and how focused she is, and also how much she wants to dance ballet to have fun, and how much she wants to dance ballet to be "good". Tell her to stick with it, because she'll probably be frustrated that she's not as good as everyone else starting out....but it will get better!

definately. i took it up again after leaving dancing for four years last year when i was like 11 and a half. if she doesn't start now, it will be harder as she gets bigger and older. she has to be committed to it. i would suggest a jazz class too becuase they are fun and will help

Is it possible to dye mesh or tule (like a ballet tutu) ?

It depends on what fiber it is made of. A lot of tulles are made of easily-dyed nylon, but some are made of practically undyeable polyester.

If it is 100% nylon, then it will be easy to dye, using a type of dye called acid dye. You will need to heat the tulle in the dyebath, preferably in a cooking pot on top of the stove, though there are also instruction for dyeing nylon in the washing machine. The nylon requires a little bit of acid, such as ordinary white vinegar, in order to take up the dye well. Use 100 ml (about two-fifths of a cup) per gallon of water that you've mixed the dye into; for a 20-gallon washing machine load, if you're dyeing in the washing machine, use 8 cups of vinegar.

You can use an all-purpose dye, such as Rit, because it contains acid dyes. You can even use good tie-dyeing dye, such as Procion MX dye, if you substitute vinegar for the soda ash presoak. The most wash-proof dyes for nylon are the Lanaset dyes, but you can buy those only online, not in most local stores.

If, on the other hand, your tulle is made of a different synthetic fiber, such as polyester or acetate, you will not be able to dye it so easily. Who you are is who you are. Don't let a type of dance define your sexuality or manly-ness. Be yourself and do what you desire. Dont let stereotypes bother you.

Does it make me less manly or gay to learn ballet?paramount theater

no. you might get teased, but I know a boy who does ballet. he just ignores all the cracks everyone makes about it and after a while everyone dropped it.

Does it make me less manly or gay to learn ballet?theatre opera theater

No it doesn't your not doing nothing really but dancing around like anybody Else but your just wearing tights
who cares what anyone else thinks???? do what you want in life and hold your head high. We only get one chance at it....what have you got to lose?...ps......there are a few big ole football players and other athletes who have taken ballet for the coordination. Guess they aren't too worried ha?
It is really sad there are such ridiculous stereotypes in the 21st century. The men in the Bolshoi in Russia are muscular, strong, graceful and could beat the sh** out of guys you think they are sissies. If you want to learn ballet, do it. It will help you with the ladies, because you will be comfortable dancing and you will be graceful. If, by chance, you are gay, you will be more comfortable with yourself and be able to get in touch with that.
No, I have a brother -in Law that was wrestling and he took ballet for movement , when he was in High School. Not sure how they cordinated but I was told they did.
No. Dancing just makes most people handle themselves more gracefully, which is definitely a plus.
No, football players take ballet to help with agility.
No.. . and gay and fem isn't bad in the first place. You've got to have the strong guy who gets to lift up all the girls!
NOWAY it helps with coordination, quality of movement, and helps your motor skills. Do it you will learn so much.

It changed my life!
Baby, you do your thing and don't worry about what people think about you. Even the rude f.u.c.k.e.r.s. leaving inappropriate comments. If you know your sexual orientation, and know for a fact that you are straight that is all that matters. Some people are always going to have something negative to say. Just do ya thing and forget the haters. You are special baby. DO YOU!! Love Tyra!!
no.
No, and it might be a good way to meet and be around women too. I think that Mikhail Baryshnikov was hetero (or at least bi), and he is one of the best ever!
No, you have to be tough mentally and physically to do ballet. Both of these things will make you a better person. Also, if you are a regular guy who happens to enjoy what you are doing, girls will dig you and guys will envy you, because girls dig you.

Good luck with your pursuit.
Let's see - you are going to be outnumbered by athletic young women by about 10 to 1 if not more. Most of the guys will be gay, so if you are straight, there's very little competition if you meet a gal you like, and you will be lifting young ladies up by the waist and spinning around or holding them in sideways positions regularly.

Hmm. I think this is a no-brainer. Sounds like a brilliant way for a straight guy to spend alot of time around beautiful nicely put together women while getting a good workout.

In various forms and types it may lean one direction or the other but strictly speaking, no art form has a gender.

Good luck.

- Kevin
Mr. Jimmy Efron, it makes you like really macho if you do ballet, "only a real man wears pink"..."only a real man does ballet", i have been doing ballet for 10 years and a lot of guys quit because their SWIMMING COACHES made fun of them...if you aren't man enough to take a risk you shouldn't get into ballet.
you know what, **** what people think. it sucks to get made fun of, you shouldnt be made fun of or anything like that for wanting to do something, it does not make you less manly and it doesnt make you gay either. just be aware people may talk about you but you just have to defend yourself or ignore the stupid comments. its totally ok to do that and dont listen to ppl that talk **** about you
No it doesn't , it makes you open-minded, confident, goal oriented and worldly = )
That's all on you buddy. The way you express your movements determines whether you're manly or gay. I took ballet myself and let me tell you, some of the guys I knew can be considered gay or manly just by the way they move their hands (VERY important), waist, feet and so on. But you're probably going to catch hell from your friends if they're considered "manly", so be prepared for that. Ballet just happens to be one of those certain stereotypes...
of course not it makes you strong and u can tell ppl that make fun of u that u get to lift up the girls
Absolutely not.

I actually think that ballet makes you, or any other guy more manly..I mean look at the outfits you have to wear. (lol)

But seriously, ballet is not easy (i used to do it so i know that for a fact), and if you're a guy that has been able to master it, bravo.
not at all. i kno this guy who dances. yeah, he gets made fun of some times, but he just laughs it off or ignores it. but it doesnt matter, cuz hes amazing! guys can b manly and dance ballet at the same time! i just dont get some ppl who think its gay 4 guys to do ballet. well, it aint, so go ahead!
No Way!!! dude i think it is totally awesome if guys do ballet. we always need more guys to do dance because they can through us up in tha air and stuff. cause it looks kind of weird for girls to be carrying girls. dont listen to ur friends or who ever is giving u a tough time.
Not unless you already dig boys. It's just a type of dancing - it can't change who you're attracted to. Most (more than half, anyway) of the ballet guys I know are actually really quite straight and are perfectly masculine. If you want to learn ballet, do it. It's an opportunity to have fun, express artistic drive, meet new people, learn or improve self-discipline, increase your agility, flexibility and strength, and get a really good workout.

If I were the type to wonder about people's sexuality, I'd actually wonder more about the people who can't handle you taking ballet than about you.
no, if u ask me, u are more man than any if u are brave enough to do it. the guy in my class isnt gay at all, if u ask me, he is pretty smart. he has 25 teenage girls around him at all times in shorts. thats pretty good for a 15 yr old boy. it use to be that we, us and him, couldnt stand each other. the whole cooties thing, boys wernt allowed to touch girls. u know, but now, the girls fight over who he gets to lift, and he soaks it up. u arnt gay, so just tell ur friend if they make fun of u, that they dont have all the ladies!!!
no...
boys may think so but I'd say no because even in ballet you can perform in a manly kind of way.
NOT AT ALL!! I teach a boy that wants to be a football star and follow in the footsteps of his hero footballer. He has had three mates try dancing with him and they backed out, but he has a dream and not caring what others say!
No.....it makes you physically and mentally fit, coordinated, with great posture and graceful movement. Besides, you get to hang out with lots of physically fit attractive young women.

Only guys who are uncertain of their own sexuality would give you a hard time about dancing.
I have a feeling it's already too late...
No. Just thinking about learning ballet makes you less manly and gay.

Do they look at your appearance when you audition for ballet?

Like have you seen any not-ugly but not-pretty professinal ballerinas?

I was just wondering if they do care about anything else than your actual dancing if you were auditioning into a company for example.

Do they look at your appearance when you audition for ballet?sunshine

Your general body type is a major factor at any kind of dance audition, but especially in ballet. First cuts are often based on looks alone before they even start paying attention to technique and performance quality.

Do they look at your appearance when you audition for ballet?star theater opera theater

dunno. if u are audtioning, and you arent that pretty - then impress them with ur dancing. and maybe try to hide ur face, with maybe a side fringe or something.
no. they look at your skills.

worry bout that stuff later.
No they don't look at beauty as far as your face goes. They look primarily at body structure (how much fat basically). Facial beauty is something that can be rectified by makeup. They just don't want to see too much body fat.
I used to do volunteer work for a famous ballet company, and sometimes we watched rehearsals and morning class. Not all the women were especially pretty. A few had bad skin (probably from sweating under heavy make-up).

One thing I learned that companies do take into consideration is the height of its men dancers. If there are a lot of short men, they'll be looking for short women at auditions.

Good lu... I mean, "Merde!"
YEA OF COURSE THEY WANNA SEE IF U R COMFORTABLE WIT THE MOVES R U STIFF AND IF U LOOK GOOD DOING THE MOVES AND IF UR BUILT 2 DO THEM
It's an audition for your dancing skills, not for how pretty you are. I don't aggree with people saying it has to do with your weight either, they look at your talent. I know alot of very good dancers that have made it far who aren't typical ballerina types. Just do your best and if you think your facial looks are going to compromise their oppinion, find a friend who is good at makeup and get them to fix you up. Good Luck!
Well, they'll look at how skinny you are, probably at how big your chest is, how wide your hips are.... But as for your face I don't think they really care.
they mainly look for poise and grace

Feel free to explore new dances....

I do ballet at class but love to dance at home, and just love to feel free and dance the way i want to,,,,

there are excersise to keep the brain going and to keep toned, do thins such as plies, (bending) , high kicks to the front, back ad side,

Stretches are really important, and keep toned and lets you become more flexible.

Can you do the splits, that will help, if you can keep practising, the more flexible you get the more easier ballet will become to you.

Any ideas on how to teach 7-8 year olds ballet?

They seem a little to old for skipping and jumping only. But not old enough to do traditional things like the barre. Still wanna make it fun, but I need to make sure they are actually learning things, not just playing around. Please gimme some ideas! Thanks!

Any ideas on how to teach 7-8 year olds ballet?performing arts show

I teach this age of ballet classes and here are some of the things I do. I start with a class stretch -- we sit on the floor and stretch out our legs and backs etc.

We do a short barre -- This gets longer throughout the year, but when at first we just learn the positions and correct posture -- after a few weeks we do a whole pile/releve exercise, then we add in tendu, the later battement -- by the end of the year we usually are able to do 4 or 5 exercises at the barre

For the rest of class we work on walking and running across the floor with our heads up, arms strong and good posture

We also progressively through out the year learn, bouree, glissade, arabesque saute', pas de shaw, grand jete', and chaine turns. At the end of class we usually do a game of fun part of a routine. I hope this helped -- Good Luck!

I don't know the dance competition world, so I don't know whether your primary concern is a song that would be familiar, or one that would stand out. But I have a taste for the obscure, so, here are a couple more obscure things that (probably) no one will recognize, but might stand out.

In 1985, a pop group called 'a-ha' released an album called 'Hunting High and Low.' You may remember the single 'Take on Me,' but that's not what I'm suggesting. The title cut didn't stand a chance on radio because it's not very 'pop-y' and doesn't follow the standard ballad phrase structure, but it is a beautiful song that I think would lent itself to ballet.

In 1993, the Alan Parsons Project released an album called 'Try Anything Once.' There is an instrumental on it called 'Jigue,' with has at its heart an Irish jig-type melody on violin, but switches to an electric guitar counter melody. It has a nice solid beat and a unique sound.

There are also several possibilities on Mannheim Steamroller's 'Fresh Aire' series of albums (all instrumental, and varying tempos.)

Obviously, these might be a challenge to find, but I have them all and if you're curious about any, contact me. I'm sure if I scanned my collection, I could find even more obscure stuff that would be very danceable (jazz or ballet,) but I'd need more direction (mood, tempo, vocal/instrumental, etc.)

Another slightly less obscure track that might make a good jazz dance is the Lemur King's song (I Like to Move It, Move It!) from the movie 'Madagascar!'

ADDITION: My music player just shuffled a wild idea to mind: Will she be doing ballet %26amp; jazz numbers at the same competition? Aaron Copeland wrote a ballet called 'Rodeo,' from which most people know the piece 'Hoedown,' because it was the soundtrack for the 'Beef- It's What's for Dinner!' commercials a while back. Anyway; in the 70's, Emerson, Lake %26amp; Palmer rearranged that tune as a keyboard-driven hard rock piece at about double-time. If you consider it danceable, it might be interesting to use very different arrangements of the same tune for 2 different dances!
I like that song from the old navy commercial- its called Check It Out by Komeda and its a bonus track on their album Kokomemedada. Also I like the song a "Charmed Life" from a target commercial sometime back for a jazz number.

For ballet, I like the usual classical arrangements, you actually could use something like U2's Vertigo, or if you really want to be daring you could use a piece that Michelle Kwan skated to called "Gulistan Bayati Shiraz" composed by Fikrat Amirov.[available as a CD on the Olympia Explorer Series Label, OCD 490]. It may be hard to find, but the whoever's listening won't forget you.

Best of luck in all you do!
"All You Need is Love" from the Beatles. Great for ballet.
I would like to see a ballet danced to Chariots of Fire.
There are great semi-instrumentals by artists such as Adiemus, Yanni, or Clannad. LIsten and take your pick.
Jazz

The last few years of his career were less than impressive (including being traded for a 7th round pick) but before about 2003 he was definitely the best receiver of all time without question.
No, he's a first ballot guy.
His overall career numbers will make him a definite first ballot inductee. His last couple of years were not stellar but when you look at his career in totality it is hard to argue that he was not one of the best to ever play at his position. I also like him because he was never a distraction in much the same vain as some other great ones such as TO.
He's a first ballot hall of famer. He has made 2 qb's hall of famers. Holds every recieveing record except for a couple in the NFL. Lasted how long and was So good and almost never got hurt. Played any Position and was a great teammate throught out his whole life. Not only does he have almost every WR record. No one is even in the same zip code even country code of breaking almost any of his records. Yeah he's just that damned good. The only thing that would stop him from makeing the hall if he bet on all the games and pulled a pete rose and then mix in Barry Bonds Steroid Scandle. (BTW if you actaully saw Jerry you know thats not true dude is 5-11 at 180. Honestly you look at him and go Are you kidding thats the best WR in the world.) Yeah He's that damned good
His receiving stats are the best of all time. The only way that he could not be elected the first time is if there are several people with super credentials at other positions who are eligible for election at the same time as him.

That's not going to happen.
Best to ever play the position, no argument can be made for other than first ballot.
Jerry Rice should not have to wait to be put into the hall of fame. He should go in today. He is and was THE best player to ever play football. Im the biggest Rice Fan.
Yeah,What they all said. rice-o-roni,baby!! go 9rs!
Only a player hater would think that Rice wasn't the greatest ever.
Nope. He's in without a doubt.

Go Cowboys!
Mr. Rice is an athlete and a gentleman. He is first draft material. He's the best wide out in American Football history. Bar none. His RAC is superb and he has that(those) super bowl MVPs too. Helps that he had great QBs, but that grace is all his.

Um, there's like one male ballet danser for every 10 girls, so the odds of getting parts are good.

Then most of the male dancers are gay, so if you're straight you'll have 100:1 ratio of slender ballerina's to you. Those make for some good odds.

The same applies to learning French!

Could anybody tell me all the clothes needed for dancing ballet, and which are the colors usually worn please?pacific theater

Females normally wear a plain black leotard (or at least a solid color or two tone if the school is more liberal), ballet pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Do not wear any jewelry, and hair should be secured tightly in a bun with no bangs or "wispies" in your face. Do not wear underwear under your leotard - it looks REALLY bad.

Males normally wear a close fitting white t-shirt or tank top, black dance/jazz pants, male tights, or shorts for boys or men's dance tights for older boys and men, and black (more common) or white ballet shoes. Older boys and men should also wear a dance belt.

for ballet ppl ususally wear pink ttights with a black leotard

the main colors u can wear if ur studio isnt picky r pink baby blue black and white

call ur dance studio and ask theyll b more then happy to help u
so...

head/hair- neat tight bun with a hairnet (can get them from any dance store) that matches your hair, and if it's an audition or somewhere where you need to attract alittle attention a bright colored ribbon helps.

body- a black leotard (girls, halters look good if you can war a strapless bra. make sure you try it on before you buy it to make sure it looks good)

legs-, pink tights (bloch is my favorite brand) o ya and you don't want hot pink it's a light pink.

shoes- it depends what kind of ballet but most likely you'll want cloth or leather (i prefer cloth, it molds to your feet well) sansha is a great cloth and bloch is a good leather.

hope i helped!!!
At my studio, we have

hair in a slicked back bun

no jewelry

black leotard

light pink tights

tan or light pink ballet slippers
"fingertoes"?
black leotard and pink tights. some studios allow dancing shorts
Usually you will have a class leotard, telling you what color. If not, I'd suggest black. Pink tights are a MUST, they allow your ballet mistress to see your muscles easier, and let them know if you are positioned wrong.

Hair is supposed to be in a bun. If you wear your hair down or in your face at my studio, you have to do 50 push-ups. Bobby pins, hair nets, hair ties, and hairspray will become your best friend.

Classic pink ballet slippers are required for beginners, after several years, with your teachers permission, you may go en pointe.

No jewelry should be worn for safety issues, and earrings should be simple studs.
You can usually ask the person whom you buy your dacning clothes from.

The color depends on what grade ballet you are. But black is also acceptable.

Grade 1 onwards: Light Pink Leotards

Grade 3/4 onwards: Mulberry Pink Leotards

Grade 6 onwards: Dark Blue Leotards.

Jewelerry should not be worn while dancing. Watches, bracelets and such should be taken off.

No gloves are needed.

Shoes: If you're not doing Pointe Work, soft normal ballet shoes (purchasable at ballet stores) Which are pink. For higher grades, with ribbons

Tights should be worn after grade 3. Mostly worns for dnacers once get the periods onwards.

If you dont wear tights, wearsocks. Flesh colored.

Long hair should be tied up into a bun.

Nails short.

HOPE THAT HELPS! HAVE FUN!
It really depends on the teacher/studio, you should ask ahead there. Sometimes studios require a black leo with pink tights, but some allow you to wear skirts and stuff, it really varies. As far as shoes go, there are acouple different kinds of ballet shoes. depending on your level, you will want to get split sole shoes. They also have canvas or leather shoes, you should again, ask your teacher what he/she wants. Always get pink shoes though. Your hair is definently in a bun with no hairs in your face, if you have bangs, clip them up. Most teacjers also allow you to wear a headband. Good Luck!
Hi!!

I am a dancer. Here is what we wear @ our studio...

Hair- You should wear your hair in a very tight bun or sometimes ponytail. Bobbypin any "wispies".

Leotard- Wear a black leotard.

Tights- I suggest wearing either pink or white tights.

Skirt- It is your option to wear a skirt or not, but I think it looks really wierd without one.

shoes- You will need pink ballet shoes, unless your teacher tells you 2 wear a different color.

Jewelry- On your first time @ ballet, don't wear any necklaces, bracelets, or dangling earrings... See what the other girls wear.

At my studio you are aloud to wear a tight tshirt... your studio may be different.

If you dont feel comfortably wearing just a leotard, ask your ballet teacher if you can wear a cami or tank top.

I hope this helps and good luck!!

Jamie%26lt;3
it all depends on your studio, and what their policy on leotards and tights is.

well at my studio, at my level our hair has to be in a bun, we have to wear black leotards, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes, and then pointe shoes if we have them.
